How do lightweight innovations from Canada contribute to the sustainability of heavy vehicles?
This is a complex question because large commercial, off and on road vehicles require structural strength and durability to perform over their lifetime. Historically structural strength in our vehicle category would be synonymous with a large and heavy vehicle design. Reducing weight on its own would lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions but on a 30,000 lb vehicle we would need to achieve a 2000-5000 lb weight saving for it to have a meaningful impact. Moving to battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell technology propulsion would have a more meaningful impact on sustainability, and weight reduction would play an important part in increasing operating time or vehicle range.

What can the participants of the Global Lightweight Summit expect in your session and why should they not miss the event at all?
We will highlight Canada’s diverse expertise in lightweighting from material development to automotive manufacturing, and showcase cutting-edge technologies from Canada. Canada’s automotive and transportation industry includes sustainable and innovative supply chains and an innovative technology ecosystem, and is open to international players.
