What is the role of additive manufacturing in the Canadian lightweight industry?
Frank Defalco: Lightweighting and the more efficient use of material and resources continues to be a strong driver across all industries. Aerospace and automotive exemplify both the promise and barriers facing adoption of additive manufacturing for lightweighting. There is intense competition between alternative manufacturing processes (these are often far from “conventional”) as well as between materials, whether these are metals, fibres, or plastics.
Lightweighting application highlights for additive manufacturing continue to evolve around thermal and electrical management. For factories of the future, it remains to be seen whether additive will lead to cars being built like rockets (vs the other way round). Design freedom, creativity, agility, and cost will be key ingredients all Canadian additive manufacturing solutions.
In this context: How advanced is the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence?
Frank Defalco: AI and more specifically deep learning algorithms can provide a significant value over traditional controls or methods whenever there is a high degree of complexity and large number of data tags or features in any manufacturing process. Hence, in part due to the complexity of the physics and processes involved, additive manufacturing is a prime candidate yielding significant business value from the use of AI technologies. As AM is maturing, the process stability and controls to make the AM process efficient and cost-effective benefits more and more from AI and digital technologies in general.
